Calculation and Classification as Dimensions of Social Interaction

Cassirer interpreted the transition from medieval to modern theoretical thinking as an epistemological revolution which saw the concept of function to replace that of substance as a guide to knowledge. This article suggests that, in the practical world, classification into classes, types or genres is correlated to the concept of substance, while the concept of function is present in any practical calculation in the form of algorithmic procedures. The way in which algorithmic calculation and classification interact with each other has resulted in the preservation, expansion or loss of social interaction, understood as reciprocity between actors. The action of calculation and classification can then be used as epistemological coordinates to analyze social interaction. Such systematization results in a set of schemes presented in this paper along with ethnological studies supporting the theoretical model

Effect of potential fluctuations on shot noise suppression in mesoscopic cavities

We perform a numerical investigation of the effect of the disorder associated with randomly located impurities on shot noise in mesoscopic cavities. We show that such a disorder becomes dominant in determining the noise behavior when the amplitude of the potential fluctuations is comparable to the value of the Fermi energy and for a large enough density of impurities. In contrast to existing conjectures, random potential fluctuations are shown not to contribute to achieving the chaotic regime whose signature is a Fano factor of 1/4, but, rather, to the diffusive behavior typical of disordered conductors. In particular, the 1/4 suppression factor expected for a symmetric cavity can be achieved only in high-quality material, with a very low density of impurities. As the disorder strength is increased, a relatively rapid transition of the suppression factor from 1/4 to values typical of diffusive or quasi-diffusive transport is observed. Finally, on the basis of a comparison between a hard-wall and a realistic model of the cavity, we conclude that the specific details of the confinement potential have a minor influence on noise.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. A tensão entre cálculo e classificação como dinâmica da exclusão social

As the formal logic informs us, calculus and algorithm are two faces of the same coin. Nevertheless, algorithm suffers a forcing of calculus’s properties when it deals with irreducibly ontological entities trying their formalization through the classification. If, on one hand, the requirements of calculus produce classification, on the other hand, they shock against this one. In the contemporaneous economic dynamics, calculus tends to exclude from the productive processes the rigidity of classification (and the subjects involved in it), but it promotes the classificatory logic in the market and public services. Obsolete in the productive life, classification is requested in the private life, and it inserts the individual who is socially disqualified into a mechanism that confirms and amplifies at every single moment the negative value of his condition. No entanto, o algoritmo sofre um descompasso das propriedades do cálculo quando lida com entidades irredutivelmente ontológicas, tentando sua formalização mediante a classificação. Se, por um lado, as exigências do cálculo engendram a classificação, por outro, se chocam com esta. Nas dinâmicas econômicas contemporâneas, o cálculo tende a excluir dos processos produtivos a rigidez da classificação (e os sujeitos nela envolvidos), mas promove a lógica classificatória no mercado e nos serviços públicos. Marginalizada na vida produtiva, a classificação é solicitada na vida privada e insere o indivíduo que se encontra socialmente desqualificado em um mecanismo que lhe confirma e amplifica a cada momento o valor negativo de sua condição. A dualidade da despersonalização no consumo

Several marketing theories have highlighted the role of depersonalization in consumer behavior. Moving from “old” to “new” products, the consumer reduces the depersonalization generated by the excessive market diffusion of the product he has chosen and through which he searches for a social self-categorization. But this theoretical framework cannot justify in a convincing way those stable integrations of a community type around particular styles of consumption (for example, those that are called “neotribalisms”). On the basis of an empirical study, we argue that the depersonalization acts according to a duality neglected by marketing. On the one hand it can mean loss of the distinguishing characteristics, but on the other it can mean de-personalization in the sense of a translation of the “me” into a communal “us”. This second form of depersonalization does also exist in consumption and allows us to shed light on the apparent contradiction between the idea of several marketing theories according to which consumers can always achieve satisfaction through differentiation and the thesis of a “final dissatisfaction” of the consumer, advocated by much of contemporary theoretical sociology.Key words: consumption, self-categorization theory, optimal distinctiveness theory, consumer dissatisfaction, neotribalism.Várias teorias do marketing destacaram o papel da despersonalização no comportamento do consumidor. Passando de “velhos” para “novos” produtos, o consumidor reduz a despersonalização gerada pela excessiva difusão no mercado do produto que ele escolheu, pois por essa escolha ele procura também se autocategorizar socialmente. Mas esse quadro teórico não consegue explicar bem aquelas integrações estáveis de tipo comunitário ao redor de estilos de consumo particulares (p. ex., as que são chamadas de “neotribalismos”). Na base de um estudo empírico nosso, defendemos que a despersonalização atua conforme uma dualidade desconsiderada pelo marketing. Ela, de um lado, pode significar perda de marcos distintivos, mas, de outro, pode significar des-personalização no sentido de um deslocamento do “eu” para um “nós” comunitário. Essa segunda vertente da despersonalização existe também no consumo e permite lançar uma luz sobre a aparente contradição entre a ideia de fundo de muitas teorias do marketing, pelas quais os consumidores podem sempre alcançar a satisfação mediante a diferenciação, e a tese da “insatisfação definitiva do consumidor”, defendida por boa parte da sociologia teórica contemporânea.Palavras-chave: consumo, teoria da autocategorização, teoria da distinção ótima, insatisfação do consumidor, neotribalismo

This paper intends to emphasize the presence of the phenomenon of ambivalence in the concept of science as presented by Bauman. Therefore, it discusses the role of science in modernization and its failure as a tool designed to overcome ambivalence. The discussion is followed by a final comment that highlights the value of Bauman’s theses from a predominantly epistemological perspective rather than the sociological perspective notoriously adopted by Bauman himself. O aprendizado da diversidade cultural e a patrimonialização da biodiversidade

This article discusses the phenomenological assumptions that are at the basis of a relational approach between the conceptions of biodiversity and cultural diversity in the horizon of community experiences of the production of identity goods operating in processes of pre-patrimonialization. The scope of this discussion comprehends cases investigated in different regions of Brazil in order to recognize the various perceptions of otherness that constitute the experiences revealed through an ecological path, as well as their situational and discursive agencies. The enunciation of these agencies, in turn, takes into account that the latter are conditioned or mediated by market and institutional devices of cultural and environmental policies, such us emergent arrangements of biodiversity.Keywords: biodiversity, community agency, cultural and environmental policies, cultural heritage.O artigo discute os pressupostos fenomenológicos que embasam uma abordagem relacional entre as concepções de biodiversidade e de diversidade cultural, no horizonte de experiências comunitárias de produção de bens identitários operantes em processos de pré-patrimonialização cultural. O escopo dessa discussão considera alguns casos investigados em várias regiões do Brasil, de forma a reconhecer as percepções de alteridade constitutivas das experiências reveladas pela via ecológica, assim como seus agenciamentos situacionais e discursivos. A exposição de tais agenciamentos considera, por sua vez, que os mesmos são condicionados ou mediados por dispositivos e canais mercantis ou institucionais das políticas culturais e ambientais, como arranjos emergentes de biodiversidade. Consumo e Subjetividade: do Neotribalismo aos circulos viciosos do consumo

Buscaremos, nesse artigo, realizar uma discussão bibliográfica, amparada em estudos empíricos. Procuraremos compreender na literatura atual, em que medida o consumo pode atuar tanto como força socialmente integradora, quanto como uma estratégia de diferenciação. No primeiro caso, o consumo parece reforçar as tendências em procurar uma cultura de comunidade mediante uma simbologia específica, como no “neotribalismo” ou na “performatividade” dos grupos marginalizados, fundada na lógica da distinção. No segundo, se mostra amparado num cálculo racional das diferenças de acordo com a lógica de produção e de manipulação dos significantes sociais, como indica o conceito de “sociedade de consumo”, gerando às vezes satisfação cíclica e, em outras, círculos viciosos
